Rural sociologists have dealt with the question of land use and access to land within great plantations. The colonial period has left a problematic land tenure structure, marked by the violence of the clientelistic and paternalistic relations. In this paper, we analyze the socio-historical patterns of social relations involving land tenure in the light of the current real estate and touristic speculation context. Our empirical field is based on the case of the afro-descendant community of Sibauma (Rio Grande do Norte), in the northeastern coast of Brazil. The new socioeconomic configuration, which include foreign investors, tourists, local landowners and native groups, tends to exacerbate the land tenure problems inherited from historical territorial struggles.
Key words: Northeast; afro-descendant community; land expropriation ER -
