INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

ENGLISH

OBSERVATION

It is permitted for authors to archive their works in open access repositories as non-peer-reviewed "pre-prints", as well as archive their articles in open access repositories as "post-prints" - that are incorporating changes and modifications resulting from peer-review comments. J Surg Cl Res does not have any special restrictions or conditions which apply to these rights, including copyrights. It is allowed for authors to archive the final published version of their articles as a pdf file.

 The Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research, official publication of the Department of Surgery, Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte-Brazil, is published each six months in one volume per year, and its goal is the diffusion of articles in all surgical and clinical specialties, as well as other health areas, that contribute to their teaching, advancement and nationwide integration.

The articles published in the Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research follow the uniform requirements recommended by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (www.icmje.org), and are submitted to peer review. The Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research supports the policies for the registration of clinical trials of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), as the Journal acknowledges the importance of such initiatives toward the registration and international diffusion of publicly accessible information on clinical studies.

The Board of Reviewers (in charge of peer-review) receives the texts anonymously and decides on their publication. In the event of conflicting opinions, the Editor-in-chief judges whether another expert opinion is needed. Rejected articles are returned to the authors. Only papers in compliance with the requirements for publication in the Journal will be submitted to review. The approved articles may undergo editorial alterations, provided these do not compromise the merit of the work.

GERAL INFORMATIONS

The Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research reviews manuscripts for publication in English, (Review articles are accepted in Portuguese and English) complying with the Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (Vancouver), prepared and published by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE - www.icmje.org). Articles for the Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research should fit into one of the following categories:

EDITORIAL

The opening article of the journal, usually on a subject of present relevance, requested from an author of recognized technical and scientific expertise.

ORIGINAL ARTICLE

The full report of a clinical or experimental investigation with positive or negative results. It should consist of the Title, Abstract, Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Abstract (in English and Potuguese) and References. These must be limited to a maximum of 30 and include, whenever possible, articles by Brazilian authors and national journals.
The title should contain the maximum of information, the minimum of words, and no abbreviations. On the same page, the full name(s) of the author(s) followed by the name(s) of the institution(s) where the work was conducted. For multicenter work, it is required to inform in Arabic numerals the affiliation of each author respective to the institutions listed. The authors should attach to their names only one academic title, that which best represents their academic activity. The abstract in must not exceed 250 words and be structured as follows: objective, methods, results, conclusions and keywords as listed in MeSH amd DeCS (http://decs.bvs.br). A maximum of 6 keywords can be used.

REVIEW ARTICLE

The Editorial Board encourages the publication of a subject of great interest to specialties, presenting a relevant and concise critical review and not merely a chronological outline of the literature. The article should include an introduction with an outline of the reasons that prompted the writing of the article, the search criteria, followed by text arranged in headings and subheadings according to the complexity of the subject matter, and unstructured abstract. When appropriate, conclusions, the authors' views summarizing the content of the review, can be included at the end of the paper. The article should contain a maximum of 15 pages and 45 references.  (Review articles are accepted in Portuguese or in English).

PRELIMINARY NOTE

It consists of original clinical observation or a description of technical innovations, concisely presented, preferably not exceeding 500 words, 5 references, 2 illustrations and an unstructured abstract. A maximum of 3 authors are allowed.

CASE REPORT

It is not accepted for publication.

TECHNICAL NOTE

Information on a particular operation or procedure relevant to surgical practice. The manuscript should not exceed 6 pages including the photos and references, if needed. The Technical Note is a free-format article, with abstract in English.

EDUCATIONAL ARTICLE

Content addressing the teaching of surgery at the undergraduate and graduate level, free format. Un structured abstract is needed.

 FORMATTING AND STYLE

Text

The text of the manuscripts submitted for publication must be original and sent in digital form (Word Doc), double-spaced and written in Arial 11pt. The illustrations must be submitted separately in JPG or TIF format and may be inserted in the manuscript. Articles should be concise and written only in English. Abbreviations should be kept to a minimum and restricted to terms that are mentioned repeatedly, provided the comprehension of the text is not compromised, and should be defined the first time they appear in the text.

REFERENCES

References should predominantly list papers published over the last 5 years not forgetting to include national authors and journals, and must be restricted to those papers referred to in the text, in the order of their citation, numbered consecutively and presented according to the Vancouver Style guidelines (Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals - ICMJE www.icmje.org). Conference proceedings and personal communications will not be accepted as references. Citations from books and theses should be discouraged. The authors of the article are responsible for the veracity of the references.

Acknowledgments should be addressed to persons and institutions who contributed substantially to the completion of the work.

 TABLES AND FIGURES

Tables and figures should be numbered in Arabic numerals and headed by their respective one- or two-sentence legends. Symbols should be explained and statistical interpretation put in footnotes. Tables must be referred to from the text in numerical order, and include only data which are necessary for the understanding of important points in the text. The data presented in tables and figures should not be repeated in graphs. Tables should be constructed in accordance with the aforementioned Vancouver guidelines.

Figures are all photographs, graphs, charts and drawings. All figures should be referenced in the body of the text, numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals, and should be accompanied by descriptive legends.

Authors may publish color figures without cost (This is a free Journal).

Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research is completely free, an open access journal, an ideal platform for the publication of research, enabling to reach the widest available audience of biomedical professionals in the surgical field of expertise. Publication in this journal means that research articles will be available for immediate free access online. Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research shortens the time needed before publication, offers a high quality peer-review system, and professional copyediting.

ETHICS

The research on human subjects must be submitted and approved by the  Institutional Ethical Committee (Insert the Protocol number) in accord with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975 as revised in 2008.

The research in laboratory animals must be submitted and approved by the Ethical Committee of the Institution (Protocol number)

 O Journal of Surgical and Clinical Research recebe trabalhos para publicaçáo apenas em Inglês, que cumpram os Requisitos para Manuscritos Submetidos a Revistas Biomédicas (Vancouver), elaboradas e publicadas pelo Comitê Internacional de Editores de Periódicos Médicos (ICMJE - www.icmje.org).

A submissáo do artigo deve ser exclusivamente on-line.

EDITORIAL

Artigo de abertura de cada fascículo da revista, geralmente sobre um tema de relevância atual, solicitado de um autor de reconhecida capacidade técnica e científica.
Artigo Original: Relato completo de investigaçáo clínica ou experimental, com resultados positivos ou negativos. Deve ser constituído de Título, Autores e respectiva afiliaçáo, Introduçáo, Métodos, Resultados, Discussáo, Referências, Abstract (em Inglês). As referências devem ser limitadas a um máximo de 30 e incluir, sempre que possível, artigos de revistas brasileiras indexadas.
O título deve conter o máximo de informações, o mínimo de palavras, e sem abreviaturas. Na mesma página, o nome completo do (s) autor (es), seguido do nome da (s) instituiçáo (ões) onde o trabalho foi realizado. Os autores devem anexar aos seus nomes apenas um título acadêmico, o que melhor representa a sua actividade acadêmica.
O resumo náo deve exceder 300 palavras e deve ser estruturado da seguinte forma: objetivos, métodos, resultados, conclusões e palavras-chave constantes no DeCS (http://decs.bvs.br) ou no MeSH. Um máximo de 6 palavras-chave.

ARTIGO DE REVISÁO

O Conselho Editorial incentiva a publicaçáo de um assunto de grande interesse para as especialidades cirúrgicas e clínicas, constituído de uma revisáo crítica pertinente e concisa, e náo apenas um esboço cronológico da literatura. O artigo deve conter uma introduçáo com um resumo das razões que motivaram a escrita do artigo, seguido por um texto organizado em títulos e subtítulos de acordo com a complexidade do assunto. Quando apropriado, conclusões podem ser incluídas no final do texto. O artigo de revisáo deve conter um máximo de 20 laudas e 45 referências. Somente os artigos de revisáo seráo aceitos em Inglês ou em Português.
Artigo de Iniciaçáo Científica: É constituído por relato completo original de uma investigaçáo clínica ou experimental realizada por alunos de cursos de graduaçáo, orientados por profissional de reconhecida capacidade científica. Este tipo de artigo é incentivado e deve ter como autor responsável um orientador ou tutor.

NÃO SÃO ACEITOS PARA PUBLICAÇÃO.

NOTA TÉCNICA

Informaçáo sobre uma determinada operaçáo ou procedimento relevante para a prática cirúrgica ou clínica. O manuscrito não deve exceder 6 páginas, incluindo as fotos e referências, se necessário.

ARTIGO DE TEMA EDUCACIONAL

O conteúdo deve abordar o ensino de cirurgia em nível de graduaçáo ou pós-graduação, em formato livre. Abstract obrigatório.

FORMATO E ESTILO

Texto

O texto dos manuscritos submetidos para publicaçáo devem ser inéditos e enviados em formato digital (Word.Doc), com espaçamento duplo e escrito em Arial 12pt. As tabelas devem ser inseridas diretamente no texto (Resultados), como também as figuras em formato JPG, ou TIF. Os artigos devem ser concisos e escritos exclusivamente em Inglês. Abreviaturas devem ser inseridas em número mínimo e restritas a termos que sáo mencionados repetidamente, desde que a compreensáo do texto náo seja comprometida. As abreviaituras devem ser definidas na primeira vez que aparecem no texto.

AGRADECIMENTOS

Agradecimentos devem ser dirigidos a pessoas e instituições que contribuíram substancialmente para a realizaçáo dos trabalhos. Devem aparecer no texto antes das referências.

REFERÊNCIAS

As referências devem predominantemente ser de artigos publicados nos últimos 5 anos, náo esquecendo de incluir autores brasileiros. Devem ser restritas aos documentos referidos no texto, na ordem de citaçáo, numeradas consecutivamente e apresentadas de acordo com a orientações de Vancouver (Requisitos para Manuscritos Submetidos a Revistas Biomédicas - www.icmje.org ) Conferências e comunicações pessoais náo seráo aceitas como referências. As citações de livros e teses sáo desencorajadas. Os autores do artigo sáo responsáveis pela formataçáo e veracidade das referências.

TABELAS E FIGURAS

Tabelas e figuras devem ser numeradas em algarismos arábicos e encabeçadas por seus respectivos cabeçalhos de uma ou duas frases. Os símbolos devem ser explicados em notas de rodapé logo abaixo das tabelas, onde deve constar a interpretaçáo estatística dos dados quando for o caso. As tabelas devem ser inseridas no texto em ordem numérica, e incluem apenas dados que são necessários para a compreensáo dos pontos importantes no texto. Os dados apresentados em tabelas e figuras não devem ser repetidos em gráficos. As tabelas devem ser construídas de acordo com as orientações Vancouver.

As figuras são fotografias, gráficos e desenhos. Todas as figuras e tabelas devem ser inseridas no corpo do texto, numeradas consecutivamente em algarismos arábicos e devem ser acompanhadas por legendas descritivas. Os autores que desejam publicar figuras coloridas em seus artigos podem fazê-lo sem nenhum custo.
