Abstract

Abstract

Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective alpha-2 agonist drug, acting on brain, spinal cord and presynaptic neurons. It has analgesic, sedative, anxiolytic and sympatholytic action. Because of these properties, it can be used as an adjunct in surgical procedures that require larger amounts of anesthetics, such as in cardiac surgery, for example. Thus, this research proposes to analyze the effects and outcomes of the use of dexmedetomidine in patients submitted to cardiac surgery.

Keywords: dexmedetomidine; anesthesia; cardiac surgery.
