This article intends to analyze Concepción Arenal’s doctrine, as a
correctionalist, and its social position as prison visitator in Spain in the
19th century. Initially, the historical and temporal context in which
Arenal was inserted, stands out in order to contextualize his thought
with the criminological conjuncture of the time. In this sense, reading
leads to the development of the Correctional School making brief notes
about its main ideas and distinguishing it from the dominant
understandings of the Classical and Positive Schools. Furthermore,
based on the aforementioned doctrinal influence, the importance of
visiting and inspecting the prison system in contemporary times is
recovered as a contribution. This study is based on bibliographical and
documentary analysis, made from records made with Arenal works, as
well as from posthumous research developed by other authors regarding
their relevance to the jail.
