Devoção popular em Catalão: “Santo Antero”

Resumo

O presente artigo tratará da história de um crime ocorrido na cidade de Cataláo – GO, na década de 1930, o qual teve como acusado Antero da Costa. Acusado de assassinar Albino Felipe, rico fazendeiro da regiáo, Antero náo recebeu julgamento formal, foi acusado, preso e, retirado pela populaçáo da cadeia, foi linchado e morto. Tal episódio foi o início da santificaçáo popular de Antero, pois proporcionou ao mesmo a imagem de mártir da cidade de Cataláo. Nossa problematizaçáo relativa à história de Antero parte, especialmente, da noçáo de cultura popular e se inspira, ainda, nas noções de imaginário e religiosidade popular, tendo como pano de fundo uma discussáo sobre memória coletiva.  Assim, buscarei identificar como essa memória foi elaborada e fixada em lugares e narrativas sobre a vida e morte de Antero, questionando a construçáo de um certo imaginário e discurso que fundamentam a crença no santo.

ABSTRACT

This article will address the history of a crime that occurred in the city of Cataláo - GO, in the 1930s, in which the accused was Antero da Costa. In charge of murdering Albino Felipe, a rich farmer from the region, Antero didn’t receive a formal trial and he was accused and arrested. Then he was taken out of the jail by the city’s people, lynched and killed. This episode was the beginning of Antero’s popular sanctification, because it has given him the image of the martyr from Cataláo city. Our questioning about Antero’s history starts, especially, by recognizing the notion of popular culture, and it’s even inspired by the notions of religion and popular imagination, having as backdrop a discussion about collective memory. So I will seek to identify how this memory was established and internalized in places and narratives about life and death of Antero, questioning the construction of the imaginary and the speech which substantiate the belief in the saint.
