Abstract

In the Brazilian Amazon, particularly in the state of Pará, açaí (Euterpe oleracea) enjoyed a consolidated regional demand until the late 1980s, associated with agriculture, riverside communities, and low-income populations, serving as a dietary supplement. However, in the 21st century, with 2015 as the landmark, açaí entered and gained prominence in the global market, due to its nutritional properties and versatility in cooking and industry. It became associated with a superfood status, increasing demand, particularly in the United States and Europe. This article investigates the socioeconomic and environmental impacts of its increased global market value on the main açaí-producing municipalities in Pará, from a Sustainable Development perspective. The methodology consisted of a case study of nine municipalities, selected based on their significant representation in national açaí production, using government statistics as sources. The results aim to determine whether açaí production in Pará is aligned with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, which, in Goal 8, recommend sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth; full and productive employment; decent work; and environmental quality, in the analyzed units.
