Stereotypes and gender prejudices in french tertiary education
Abstract
This article aims to clarify what is meant by gender stereotypes and prejudices,
as well as provide some insight into representations of masculinity
and femininity in the field of French professional education. First
and foremost, in taking a detour through anthropology, this text shows
how, in other social groups and in the context of professional education,
social distinctions have occurred based on gender. It also highlights the
way in which the concept of social sex emerged through anthropological
studies. Following this, it describes the roles and stereotypes attributed
to men and women in contemporary societies as well as secondary
education in France and other countries. To do so, it presents the way
in which Experimental Psychology tests as BSRI measure the rates of

people’s masculinity, femininity and neutrality, discussing their utility.
Finally, through a clinical case and quantitative study on professional
education students and Physical Education teachers, the article explores
the functioning of prejudices and gender markers in France.
