Democracy is a concept that has been and continues to be utilized by various political spectrums to justify their agendas. However, throughout the history of republican Brazil, it is evident that authoritarian processes have been employed to seize power, often based on imaginary justifications, such as anti-communism, constructing a fictional narrative to legitimize themselves. The aim is to reflect on what this 21st-century democracy, shaped during the 20th century, represents in its bourgeois and dehumanizing essence. A qualitative approach is adopted through the works of key authors: Losurdo (2020) and Motta (2020). As initial findings, two orientations can be observed: the first is the politics of characterizing the "other," and the second is the understanding of democracy as an instrument of the socio-metabolic system of capital.
