The movement of the Ligas Camponesas was a landmark in the history of the working class in Brazil for 10 years. At its peak, from 1960 to 1964, it is observed that the movement, which originated in the state of Pernambuco, with the political and media prominence of Deputy Francisco Julião, would spread to other Brazilian states. Inspired by the peasants' struggle in Pernambuco, Floriano Bezerra de Araújo, a state deputy in the municipality of Macau/RN, organized the Ligas Camponesas movement in Rio Grande do Norte. Given the presence of the Catholic Church under Eugênio Sales, and the rural unions organized by him, the Ligas Camponesas of Rio Grande do Norte adopted the strategy of struggle and action in conjunction with the Liga Urbana of Natal, the state capital. This work results from the analysis of documents found in the DHnet archive and the Relatório Veras.
