Medicinal plants have been used by humanity throughout its history. They are characterized by their bioactive molecules, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, polyphenols and terpenoids. The main objective of this work was to describe the author's experience as a resident nutritionist, working in primary care, family and community health, especially describing her work with medicinal plants. This is an experience report. The work deals with experiences in which it was possible to work on the proposed theme, such as in waiting rooms, meetings in the community and in social facilities, as well as in the production of informative materials, and work with the basic health unit (UBS) team itself. It also provides a description of the experience of building the UBS garden. Finally, it is concluded that primary care, as a gateway, is an excellent opportunity to work on popular knowledge, aligned with scientific knowledge, as it is a topic of common interest and understanding between nutritionists and other health professionals, with the population. Working on this topic brought connection with the community, as well as empowerment in health and self-care for the population.
