Abstract

The present article addresses how reports from the late 1960s and early 1970s in the newspaper O Jornal (RJ) contributed to the construction of the city of Natal as a tourist destination. The main method of analysis used was the photographic examination of different images used in journalistic articles, aiming to understand them not only as photo illustrations but also as objects shaping their own meanings about the image-space of the city of Natal. Additionally, the analysis sought to relate these images with the discourse present in the journalistic text. Through the examination of these reports, we can perceive how photographs and captions help us better comprehend the formation of Natal's image as a tourist city for the national audience, not only for the readers of those newspapers.
