The use of aromatherapy in onco-pediatric patients

The present study aimed to investigate the different applications of aromatherapy in pediatric cancer patients through an integrative review. A study survey was carried out between 2007 and 2017, using the following keywords “Aromatherapy” AND “Child” OR “Adolescent” AND “Medical Oncology” in the MedLine database and “Aromatherapy” AND “Pediatric” AND “Medical Oncology ”In Virtual Health Library and PubMed. Articles were excluded: replicates, unavailable for full reading and that did not mention aromatherapy. The compiled data were exposed in flowcharts and charts using the LucidChart and Microsoft Word 2010 programs, respectively. The final body of the work was based on the interpretation and analysis of data extracted from 5 articles selected by the criteria used. Some data have some limitations and questionable methodologies. However, they can inform that complementary care measures and alternative therapies such as aromatherapy are able to fill incomplete care. The jobs in the onco-pediatric clinic reported were in the control of pain, emesis, anxiety and depression. It was also noted, little knowledge of such alternatives by patients and professionals working in the area. Therefore, it is possible to observe improvements related to anxiety, depression, pain, discomfort, nausea and vomiting, with aromatherapy being an important integrative option of pharmacological treatment. It warns of the need for more clinical studies and training with health professionals so that they correctly target complementary treatment options for patients.
