Abstract

Oral solutions are widely used for the pediatric patient. The use of sweeteners and flavorings in oral solutions aims to correct undesirable organoleptic characteristics. This is because some organoleptic characteristics have the potential to promote problems in adherence and administration to pediatric drug treatment. The bibliographic study aimed to investigate the main actions of sweeteners and flavorings and their contributions to the sensory properties in oral solutions for children, justified by the wide prescription of oral solutions to pediatric patients and also because children have different palatability and acceptability than adult patients.  The methodology consisted of an integrative review of the literature through the electronic databases: Scielo, Pubmed, Lilacs and the academic Google search engine, with a time cut from 2015 to 2019, search descriptors oral solutions, pediatric patients, sweeteners, flavorings and pharmaceutical excipients. The results showed that the pediatric patient has particular acceptability and palatability, and that the use of sweeteners and flavorings in oral solutions helps in adherence to therapy. It was concluded that the use of sweeteners and flavorings in oral solutions is relevant for the good adherence of drug therapy in children, however, caution is necessary in patients with specific clinical conditions and history of allergies. In this way, it contributes for the pharmaceutical professional to base his knowledge on the subject and effectively assist the pediatric patient.
