Perception of the multidisciplinary team on the intervention of occupational therapy in breast cancer patients

Breast cancer is considered one of the biggest causes of death in the world, it needs treatments from a multidisciplinary team for a more complex and complete care due to changes in lifestyle and breaks with everyday life. The Occupational Therapist is responsible for supervising any person in the rescue of the roles and daily tasks. This study aimed to analyze the perception of the multidisciplinary team about the intervention of Occupational Therapy in the patient with breast cancer. This was a field study of a quantitative approach carried out with 15 health professionals who are part of the multidisciplinary team of attention to mastectomized patients of a Hospital of reference in Oncology in the city of Teresina-PI. Datas were collected through a structured questionnaire, elaborated by a researcher, which included professional socio-demographic data and questions about the perception of these on the performance of occupational therapy in cancer patients. The data analysis showed that the team was consisted of physicians, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists, with 80% of female professionals and 53% nursing technicians; of the sample studied (87%) answered to know what Occupational Therapy was, but 60% did not know the intervention of these professionals with mastectomized patients. The majority (87%) of participants considered resolution of occupational therapy intervention. All the professionals considered important the occupational therapy assistance with the team in the treatment of breast cancer, but also the majority, did not know this action with these patients, highlighting the answer of the medical professional.
