Use of triggers tools detect adverse events to hospital drugs and improvements in the quality of care

Abstract

This study aimed to perform an integrative literature review on the use of triggers to detect adverse events to hospital medications and their benefits for improving the quality of care. This is an integrative literature review carried out through the Virtual Health Library (VHL) in February 2023, using the descriptors (DeCS) and (MESH): Pharmacovigilance (Pharmacovigilance); Drug-Related Side Effects and Adverse Reactions; and Patient Safety. A total of 1,058 studies were identified and, after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria and analyzing the studies, only 19 articles made up the final analysis. The results indicate that the method of triggers is a tool for reviewing medical records that increases the sensitivity for identifying ADE, monitoring the quality of care, tracking estimates over time and the effects of implementing interventions in harm reduction, measuring incidents and serving as an effective resource for the benefit of patient safety. It is necessary to improve and adapt the already validated triggers according to the demand and needs of each hospital unit for more specific contexts, such as pediatric, geriatric or specific therapy hospitals.
