Abstract

Toilets can be places conducive to contamination by infectious microorganisms. Surfaces such as doorknobs, toilets, faucets, and flush valves can harbor these microorganisms. The accumulation of biofilm inside the toilet and sink can contribute to the persistence of pathogens and unpleasant odors. This research was carried out with the purpose of analyzing the bacteriological incidence in sanitary seats in hospitals in Teresina. Due to their daily use, these places are seen as favorable environments for microbiological growth, so the need to identify and classify such microorganisms was observed. To this end, several laboratory experiments were performed, such as microbiological examinations and biochemical tests to differentiate the bacteria collected from several different samples from male and female bathrooms in public and private hospitals, using specific and direct methods for each sample obtained. The study revealed a higher prevalence of bacteria in the female bathroom of the public hospital, while the lowest number of bacteria was observed in the male bathroom of the public hospital. With the presence of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and a few colonies of Klebsiella. Through this, it was concluded that the significant number of bacteria found represents a potential risk for transmission of hospital infections. Therefore, it is important to adopt adequate cleaning and disinfection practices for the bathrooms, as well as a correct hygiene for professionals and patients, besides preventive actions and adequate control protocols.
