Sociology has gone and continues to go through several advances and setbacks in the history of Brazilian education. A recent setback was the end of the mandatory presence of the subject in school curricula. From this, the main objective of the article was to analyze the importance of teaching Sociology for the understanding and construction of citizenship and reflective subjects. Methodologically, a historical-documentary bibliographic research was carried out in books, scientific articles and laws that deal with the investigated theme. Many are the challenges that arise in a technical society in deep radicalization of the modernization process; faced with this scenario, and looking at the national education system, it was possible to verify that Sociology is one of the main disciplines with regard to citizenship education and reflective subjects, insofar as it seeks to develop in students, in a constructive way, a critical view of society.
