This article aims to promote the debate on aspects of the military occupation of the Curimataú River between 1659 and 1721. It is the result of research that analyzed political, economic and administrative processes of Portuguese colonization in the formation of the territory of colonial Curimataú, seeking to recompose the historical context of the sedimentation of the colonial structure around the river, based on the investigation of the actions of institutions and social groups. As the main result, we point out that the sesmaria concessions that led to the establishment of cattle ranches and indigenous villages played a decisive role in Portuguese possession and control over that territory, after the Portuguese-Brazilian reconquest of the Northern Captaincies.
