“THE AFRICA THAT CÂMARA CASCUDO CREATED”
a landscape construction of a politically imagined place

This work problematizes the writings of Luís da Câmara Cascudo and how he supported a Luso-tropicalist idea of Portugal as a “civilizing nation”, ratifying an African landscape on the margins of Portuguese colonial policy. Therefore, we will dialogue with Dennis Cosgrove (1998) to understand the concept of landscape as an “imagined literature” and with Yi-Fu Tuan (2015), who approaches space and place as constructions based on the individual’s feelings and understandings. As a methodology, we will analyze periodic sources available in the digital newspaper libraries of the National Library and the National Center for Folklore and Popular Culture, which contain articles, interviews, reports and testimonies from Cascudo himself about his experiences with African cultures.
