A medicina – e as crônicas – em nome da ordem numa cidade rumo à civilização
o Rio de Janeiro entre 1850 e 1905

Since colonial times there were pretensions of giving to Rio de Janeiro an European and civilized aspect. The problems to make it true, however, were many, founds basically in the physical space of the town with its colonial look. During Brazilian Empire, projects were elaborated with hygienists medicals, searching to give to the capital of the country a new, clean and civilized face, that reached its top in the urban interventions of the republic. We search in this work to analyze how a hygienist project elected the urban space as a target, at most the “cortices” (poor and little houses with a big number of habitants), and how those changes were desired and felled that time through the not even a little ironic chronics of Olavo Bilac.
