An eclipse of misunderstandings:
between scientific expeditions and the fear of the end of the world in the hinterlands of Paraíba (1940).

This work is part of my master’s research at PPGH/UFPB. In it, I analyze the distinct popular interpretations of a solar eclipse that occurred in 1940 in the hinterlands of Paraíba. The eclipse was observed by two American astronomical expeditions in the cities of Patos and Piancó. The phenomenon becomes an opportunity to analyze the ideas of modernity circulating in the region and their clashes with local traditions. My sources are the articles from the journalistic coverage of the Diário de Pernambuco, made in Patos by Octacílio Nóbrega de Queiroz. The newspaper becomes a space for the confrontation between scientific knowledge and popular beliefs about the eclipse. My objective is to connect these different ways of interpreting the eclipse with the ideas of modernization of the hinterlands circulating at the time.
