Views on the “Wild, Rough and distant Sertão”
Henry Koster’s experiences in the trails of the captaincies of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco (1809-1818).

The work “Views on the ‘Sertão, rough and distant hinterland’: Henry Koster’s experiences on the trails of the captaincies of Rio Grande do Norte and Pernambuco (1809-1818)” investigates the experiences of this chronicler based on his travels through the hinterlands of the former north in the aforementioned historical context. Considering the genre “Travel literature” as an important means of studying Portuguese America in this period, the work “Viagens ao nordeste do Brasil” (Koster, 1942) is examined as a historical source to contribute to the development of this research. Thus, the aim is to work on Koster’s experiences in the former north and to problematize the notions of displacement and the exercise of otherness, considering his conceptions on the multifaceted concept of Sertão from the Micro-History approach.
