sesmarias, livestock farming and environmental impacts (18th century)

Between 1500 and 1800, the relationship between humans and nature was redefined, resulting in a utilitarian view of the environment (Keith Thomas, 2010). Jason W. Moore (2022) argues that "Cheap Nature" emerged between 1450 and 1750, driven by the exploitation of the New World, leading to environmental transformations. Warren Dean (2007) highlights that, between 1700 and 1800, the arrival of 450,000 Portuguese settlers in Brazil intensified the granting of land grants (sesmarias), focusing on cattle ranching in Rio Grande do Norte. This activity, while essential for settlement, is marked by deforestation and environmental manipulation. Using the SILB platform, this research aims to georeference the sesmarias to understand the occupation process and its resulting environmental impact.
