This paper investigates the development of rural unionism in Rio Grande do Norte in the 1960s, highlighting the social and political factors that drove this movement. Using the Marxist Theory of Dependency, the research analyzes the rise of rural workers' unions (STRs), as well as the influence and differences among various political agents — such as the Catholic Church, the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB), and the Peasant Leagues — in the struggle for agrarian reform in the state. Primary sources such as the “Relatório Veras,” the “Registry Book of Unions Affiliated with FETARN,” and newspapers like O Poti, Tribuna do Norte, and A Ordem were used for this analysis.
