Memória, Patrimônio e Identidade Norte-rio-grandense na atuação de Oswaldo de Souza junto à diretoria do patrimônio histórico e artístico nacional (1961-1965)

Abstract

This communication exposes the first reflections of our master's research in History, at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte, in which we investigated the patrimonialization policy undertaken by Oswaldo Câmara de Souza (1904-1995), during his representation at the Directorate of National Historical and Artistic Heritage in Rio Grande do Norte (DPHAN-RN), specifically between 1961 and 1965, in order to understand the relationship between memory, heritage Rio Grande do Norte identity then established. This time frame was drawn up due to the period when Oswaldo Câmara de Souza joined DPHAN-RN, in 1961, and the last listing carried out by his management, in 1965. Once patrimonial services began, a series of material assets were listed in the State in a manner not seen in previous or later administrations. This leads us to the understanding that mapping, inventorying and listing was a work in line with the heritage policies of that period, which focused most on its attention on material assets. In theoretical-historiographic terms, we work with the relationship between memory, identity and heritage based on authors such as Aleida Asmann (2011), Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Junior (2011), Marcia Chuva (2009) and Cecília Londres Fonseca (2003). Methodologically, we analyzed the reports sent by Oswaldo de Souza to DPHAN, the processes of investigation of listed assets and the newspapers of the period that transmitted information about the listings to the general public; and also the exchanges of correspondence among Oswaldo de Souza and intellectuals such as Luís da Câmara Cascudo and Rodrigo Melo Franco de Andrade, as we believe in the existence of a dialogue that resulted in the definition of identity processes around the historical and artistic assets of the State of Rio Grande do Norte in the highlighted time frame.
