Abstract

This article aims to analyze feminine memory during the Brazilian military dictatorship (1964–1985) and its unfolding in there are more things (2023), by Yara Rodrigues Fowler. The novel portrays not only issues such as guerrilla warfare, exile, and the trauma experienced by those directly affected by the period of repression in Brazil, but also addresses turbulent historical moments in the United Kingdom, such as Brexit. The representation of female characters in the narrative reveals how Anglo-Brazilian literature, written by first- and second-generation Brazilian immigrants in the United Kingdom, engages with recurrent themes of trauma and testimony found in Brazilian literature. Through memory, history and fiction intertwine to highlight the consequences of the dictatorial regime within the feminine imagination. Drawing on the theoretical framework of Paul Ricœur (1984, 1985, 1988, 2004, 2014), it is argued that there are more things (2023), by Yara Rodrigues Fowler, through the distinctive language of Anglo-Brazilian literature, masterfully conveys the pain of a wound that has never been healed by society.
