BLACK IDENTITY REPRESENTATION IN DON QUIXOTE DAS CRIANÇAS AND ITS TRANSLATION INTO ARGENTINE SPANISH

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze how the character Aunt Nastácia is represented in the work Dom Quixote das Crianças, by Monteiro Lobato, published in Brazil in 1936, and how this representation is reflected in its translation into Spanish by Benjamín de Garay, published in Buenos Aires in 1938. The results obtained come from the master's dissertation entitled “The adventures of Dom Quixote das Crianças in the literary systems Brazil - Argentina,” presented to the postgraduate program in Translation Studies - Postrad, of the Institute of Letters of the University of Brasília, in 2023. The research methodology was based on the comparison of the source text (ST) and its translation (TT) into Spanish, revealing Benjamín de Garay's translation strategies, as well as the decisions he made throughout the translation process, especially about the manifestations of racism in relation to the character Aunt Nastácia. The comparative analysis between the source and target texts is based on theoretical concepts from translation studies coined by Lefevere and Basnett (1990) and Berman (2012). Monteiro Lobato’s importance as an author of Brazilian children's literature and of Benjamin de Garay as a translator of Brazilian literature into Spanish at the beginning of the 20th century doesn’t prevent the recognition, in the source and target texts, of traces of racism present in Brazilian and Argentine societies at that time.
