This article aims to propose and pilot-test the MIDEA-AI framework, which integrates Slack's (1994) Importance-Performance Matrix with generative artificial intelligence as an accessible strategic diagnostic tool for micro and small enterprises. The Importance-Performance Matrix (IPA) was used as the theoretical instrument, interpreting importance and performance scores assigned by the manager to eight competitive criteria in order to position them across the four strategic analysis zones. The methodology was based on Design Science Research (Hevner et al., 2004; Peffers et al., 2007), employing a single exploratory case study with a mixed-methods approach, conducted in a microenterprise in the air-conditioning sector in Northeastern Brazil. Data collection was carried out through a face-to-face session between the manager and the generative AI platform, guided by a structured prompt script, and through a satisfaction survey applied to five customers of the company. Data analysis adopted a three-source triangulation strategy: managerial perception, AI-generated diagnosis, and customer evaluation. Applying the MIDEA-AI framework resulted in the positioning of seven of the eight assessed criteria in the excellence zone, with price identified as the sole urgent action point, and the delivery of a complete diagnosis with a 5W2H action plan in approximately thirty minutes at near-zero marginal cost, suggesting that the integration of an importance-performance matrix with generative artificial intelligence may constitute an effective and accessible strategic diagnostic tool for micro and small enterprises.
