WOMEN AND DISSIDENCE FULFILLING PRODUCTION AND TECHNICAL ROLES IN MUSICAL EVENTS

Abstract

This article analyzes the forms of organization of women and dissidents that made possible the production of self-managed and renowned music festivals, such as GRL PWR. From data gathered through ethnographic work undertaken since 2019 that involved observations with participation in these events, trainings, talks and in-depth interviews, this article characterizes the production and technical work involved during the execution of the editions. According to what was observed, this festival fought, one on one, against the unequal distribution based on gender and sexuality of the means of artistic production, of the techne made knowledge and skills. In order to mitigate these differences, those who participated in GRL PWR created alliances with other organizations, such as RED TEMID, holding courses that sought to train women and dissidents in technical roles in order to professionalize them in these highly masculinized trades. It is concluded that these alliances in tune with transfeminist movements are related to the transformations in power relations between men and women, to the emergence of the performative imperative of “empowerment” and to the organization of “networks” (sometimes under state sponsorship) of dissidents and women working as commercial and technical producers.
