Purpose: To investigate the Operational and Environmental efficiency levels of Brazilian firms listed on the Brazilian stock exchange (B3), in the Meat and Meat Products subsector.
Methodology: To this end, with data collected in the financial statements and sustainability reports of companies with all information available for the three years analyzed (JBS S.A., Marfrig Global Foods S.A., BRF S.A. and MINUPAR Participações S.A.), the non- parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), with product orientation and constant returns (CCR output).
Results: It was noted that Marfrig is a reference in Operational and Environmental efficiency. BRF demonstrated advances in operational efficiency, increasing the score from 0.1% in 2020/2021 to 55.99% in 2022, however, still far from the benchmark (Marfrig), indicating important room for improvement. JBS achieved 100% operational efficiency in 2022, but presented intermediate levels in previous years, with moderate environmental efficiency scores throughout the analyzed period.
Contributions of the Study: By using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) technique and considering financial and environmental variables, the study offers a comprehensive assessment of the performance of these companies, highlighting opportunities to improve operational efficiency and proposing sustainable strategies. The analyzes reveal striking differences between companies, highlighting the need for specific approaches to optimize resources and reduce environmental impacts. The findings significantly contribute to improving competitiveness and sustainability in the Meat and Meat Products sector, providing valuable insights for managers, researchers and policymakers.
