Propiedades fitoquímicas, uso terapéutico y toxicidad de Mentha piperita

Mentha piperita es una especie de planta medicinal originaria de Europa y Medio Oriente, siendo ampliamente cultivada en varias regiones debido a su importancia económica. El objetivo de esta investigación fue demostrar, a través de producciones científicas, el uso terapéutico, las propiedades farmacológicas y fitoquímicas y la toxicidad de Mentha piperita. Para ello, se desarrolló una revisión integradora de la literatura, cuyas búsquedas se realizaron en las bases de datos VHL (Virtual Health Library), SciELO (Scientific Electronic Library Online) y PubMed, combinando los siguientes descriptores: Mentha piperita; Uso terapéutico; Farmacológico; Compuestos fitoquímicos; y toxicidad. Las 19 producciones científicas seleccionadas evidenciaron el uso terapéutico de M. piperita en la medicina tradicional, contra síntomas respiratorios, digestivos, musculares, dolores nerviosos y prurito. En la medicina moderna, tiene un efecto beneficioso sobre la fibrosis hepática, daño renal, náuseas, vómitos, falta de apetito, actividades cognitivas y fatiga mental. De los diversos componentes fitoquímicos, el mentol y la mentona fueron los más reportados. M. piperita es un antioxidante contra la hepatotoxicidad, renotoxicidad, estrés oxidativo, es regenerador y reparador celular. Además, tiene acción pro-supervivencia sobre nematodos, acción pro-oxidante y efecto de toxicidad sobre larvas de crustáceos. Como propiedades farmacológicas, se destacaron las actividades antimicrobianas, antifúngicas, amebicidas, larvicidas y antiinflamatorias. Desde esta perspectiva, esta herbácea tiene una prometedora aplicación en diversos segmentos científicos y médicos.
