fabric maps of the social cartography of the indigenous people Mendonça/RN

Abstract

The visual essay presents the methodology of the process of creating the social cartography of the Mendonça indigenous people, in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. From the perspective of weaving territory point by point, through the hands of indigenous women, the photographs present the sewing of techniques, knowledge and practices in making fabric maps. The maps embrace the knowledge of women in the cartographic exercise, which through sewing, painting and embroidery represent their conceptions, perspectives and life projects based on engagement in the territory. In 2021, five fabric maps were created, corresponding to the indigenous communities of Amarelão, Santa Terezinha Settlement, Marajó Settlement and Serrote São Bento. The maps are displayed in indigenous associations and schools in the Mendonça Territory.
