Transcription and traduction of the 1645 Potiguara’s assembly

On the Tuesday of the 11th of April, 1645, twenty Potiguara headmen delivered to the West India Company’s High Council in Brazil a series of manuscripts regarding part of their program to their alliance with the Dutch. The document is not new, published in 1910 by Pedro Souto Maior as “Uma assembleia de índios em Pernambuco no ano de 1645”. Nonetheless, it is necessary to state that the “Fastos Pernambucanos” historian has made at least some mistakes in the transcription and translation — as errors, neglections, and inventions. As such, a new translation may allow for the complexification of the critiques and analysis of the document, as well as its place in history. The present paper establishes a historical-philological dialogue intending to indicate and correct those mistakes.
