Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • The author must read and agree with the Editorial Policies adopted by the journal, available on the Policy page
  • After the publication in some of our sessions (thematic dossier article, free theme, review, translations, and historical documents), the author and co-authors will only be able to submit a new manuscript for evaluation respecting the interval of 2 (two) years between the publication of the text and the beginning of a new submission process. If the authors do not respect this rule, the manuscript will be automatically ignored.
  • The period of evaluation of a manuscript is estimated between 4 (four) and 7 (seven) months, due to the flow of the article and the return of the Advisory Board's referees.

Author Guidelines

1. SENDING ARTICLES

a) The Journal will accept only articles, reviews and interviews of an unprecedented character, or that have not yet been translated into Portuguese;

b) All contributions will be submitted for analysis by the editorial board of Espacialidades Journal;

c) The articles must have the limit of 12 -25 pages and 3-8 for reviews; for interviews, minimum limit of 4 pages, with no maximum limit; for sources, limit between 4-15 pages;

c) Access the article template with the specified settings, the articles must conform to the model provided.

 

2. ARCHIVES

a) The authors must send file in one of these formats: word (.doc or .docx), OpenOffice or Rich Text Format (.rtf).

b) Files with images, must appear inside the body of the text, in a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and in .jpg format.

c) when sending the file, the author must remove the properties and personal information from the document.

 

3. AUTHORSHIP

a) The Journal will accept contributions from researchers with any academic degree, from undergraduates to doctors;

b) Articles with more than three authors will not be accepted;

c) In cases of co-authorship, we follow the policy of encouraging work that is not limited to the co-authorship of supervisors. If this practice occurs, it must be inserted in such a way as to encompass plural projects with professors, interinstitutional or international and with the participation of all those involved in all the unfolding of the project elaboration, going through the discussion and research, until the finalization of the product, which that is, the academic article.

d) in case of co-authorship, all authors must register on the Journal's platform, informing their affiliation, title, link to access the Lattes curriculum and e-mail in the biography summary.

 

4. ORDER OF THE DISPOSAL OF THE CONTENT WITHIN THE FILE

a) Title of the article: centered in Garamond font, size 18, with capital letters and in bold;

b) Subtitle (if any): follows the title, centered, in Garamond font, size 18, with lowercase letters, without boldface;

c) Title and subtitle in English: below the subtitle in Portuguese, centered in Garamond font, size 13, with lowercase letters, without boldface;

d) Name of the author: aligned to the right; in Garamond font, size 13. The following information must appear in a footnote: formation of the author; institutional affiliation; research group, if the author is part of one; Lattes Curriculum e-mail address; sponsoring agency, in cases of funded research; author's email address. ATTENTION: This information should be provided in the summary of the biography at the time of the author's registration on the journal's platform and should appear in the body of the text only in the last revision, after the Final Opinion, so that the double-blind peer review is guaranteed. The first version of the article must be sent without identifying the author.

e) Abstract and keywords (in Portuguese): justified alignment in Garamond font, size 13; space between simple lines;

f) Summary and keywords (in English): justified alignment in Garamond font, size 13; space between simple lines;

g) Abstracts must contain up to 10 lines and a maximum of five keywords, not exceeding the first page of the file;

h) Body of the article;

i) References.

 

5. FORMATTING THE BODY OF THE ARTICLE

a) Font: Garamond;

b) Size: 13;

c) Line spacing: 1.5;

d) Spacing after paragraph: 12 pt;

e) Paragraph: 1.5;

f) Alignment: justified;

g) Document margins: Left, right and bottom 2.5; higher than 3.0;

h) Titles contained in the text must appear in lowercase and bold;

i) The editors of the magazine reserve the right to change formal aspects of the text, such as spacing, bold, italics, etc. so that the magazine maintains a homogeneous pattern.

 

6. FIGURES, TABLES, CHARTS AND GRAPHICS

a) Figures, tables, charts and graphs must be inserted in the body of the text;

b) All elements must contain a legend, placed above them, in Garamond font, size 13 pt, and with typological and numerical indication preceding them (eg: Figure 1: Title)

c) The indication of the font must come below the element, in Garamond font and size 11 pt.

 

7. BIBLIOGRAPHIC REMISSIONS, QUOTES AND FOOTNOTES

a) Bibliographic references should appear in the main body of the text, in parentheses, with the name of the author, followed by the publication date of the work and the page number, as in the example: (BURKE, 1997, p. 77).

b) Citations with more than three lines should be highlighted, with 4 cm indentation on the left, font size 11 and single spacing;

c) footnotes: justified alignment in Garamond font, size 11.

d) In the case of direct quotations from books in different languages, the writing of the article must include the translation in the body of the text and the original in a footnote;

e) When there is a direct quotation translation, place the expression "our translation" in reference, according to ABNT - NBR 10520.

 

8. BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCES

Bibliographic references should constitute a single list at the end of the article, in alphabetical order. Garamond font, size 13, with space between simple lines, separated by a line between each reference.

a) For books: SURNAME, author's first name. Book's title. City: Publisher, Year.

b) For book chapter: SURNAME, Author's first name. Chapter title. In: SURNAME, author's first name. Book's title. City: Publisher, Year. Pp. XX-XX.

c) For a journal article: SURNAME, Author's first name. Title of the article. Title of the Journal. City, v., N., P., Month (if any) Year.

d) All other forms of references that were not included in this section must be followed according to the standards of ABNT NBR 6023/2018

 

9. INCLUSION OF METADATA

Must contain the following metadata

a) Names of authors;

b) Article title (Lower case);

c) Abstract (maximum of 10 lines);

d) Key words, separated by semicolons (from 3 to 5);

e) With the exception of the authors' names, all other metadata must be submitted in Portuguese and English.

 

10. PEER REVIEW PROCESS

Espacialidades journal adopts the double-blind peer review process to evaluate manuscripts. This process ensures the anonymity of reviewers and authors. Firstly, the authors must register on our website and then submit the manuscripts, agreeing to our terms and privacy statements. Before submit the manuscript, it is necessary to make sure that the work complies with all the rules required by the journal. The authors must verify whether the manuscript is related to the scope of the journal, which emphasizes spatiality as an approach to the historical, socio-cultural and economic aspects that characterize space as a product of human relations.

After the submission of the manuscript, the Editorial Board analyzes the article observing the following aspects: compliance with guidelines for authors, attention to the scope of the journal, importance and originality of the manuscript, comply with ethics and good publications practices, avoiding plagiarism, fraud and other violations of content and conduct. After this analysis we issue a prior opinion, that can be: a) positive – it means that the author fulfilled all the technical requirements demanded by the journal, and the manuscript goes directly to the next phase; b) negative – it means that the author do not fulfilled all the technical requirements and the manuscript does not have any relation with the scope of the journal; c) positive, after corrections – it means that the manuscripts has relation with the scope of the journal, but partially with the technical requirements demanded by the journal. In this situation, the manuscript goes back to the author to make adjustments.

If accepted at this stage, the manuscript will be forwarded to a professor of the Advisory Board, an expert on the topic of the article, who will issue a final opinion of the manuscript. It will be analyzed if the manuscript follows our Ethics Policy (https://periodicos.ufrn.br/espacialidades/eticaespacialidades) and the following items: the originality and scientific relevance of the manuscript, organization and structure of the text, theoretical framework, methodology and bibliography. The final result must be justified, that can be: a) recommended publication without corrections; b) recommended publication after adjustments, according to the suggestions given by the professor of the Advisory Board; c) recommended publication, considering or not the suggestions made; d) publication not recommended. 11. ORGANIZATION OF THE JOURNAL

The Journal has the following sections:

Presentation

Text prepared and signed by the Editorial Team of the Journal that introduces the reader to the themes of the published articles and the contents of its various sections.

Dossier

Thematic Dossier: set of articles gathered under a specific theme linked to the concentration area History and Space, of the PPGH-UFRN, each containing between 12 (twelve) and 25 (twenty-five) pages, including abstract, bibliography and appendices.

Free Section

Texts that bring a theoretical discussion, final or partial results of academic research, that discuss the relationship between History and Space, focusing on the various relationships that characterize space as a historical production. With a minimum of 12 (twelve) and a maximum of 25 (twenty-five) pages, including abstract, bibliography and appendices.

Reviews

Critical summary, between 3 (three) and 8 (eight) pages, including bibliography, of works in the field of History or related areas, which discuss the relationship between History and Space, focusing on the various relationships that characterize space as a historical production. Only reviews of works produced in the last 5 (five) years will be accepted, counting from the submission date.

Interview

Section produced by the editorial team with professionals from history or related fields. Interviews for publication will also be accepted, as long as there is a relationship with the thematic dossier and the scope of the Journal.

Sources

Publication of primary documentation, accompanied by a text that explains the possibilities of using the source in the production of research in the field of History and Space.

Translation

Dissemination of sources translated into Portuguese, as well as chapters of foreign books or articles, as long as authorized by the authors and that has not been previously published in Portuguese.

Privacy Statement

The names and addresses informed in this magazine will be used exclusively for the services provided by this publication, and will not be made available for other purposes or to third parties.
