Social movements in contemporary society are assuming increasing complexity and rich organizational detachable. The main objective of this paper is to present a reflection on the experiences of the Movement Quilombo Piauí, started in the late 80s and strengthened over the past 10 years. The emergence of the Movement and its consolidation Quilombo gave greater prominence piauienses maroon communities, expanding the discussion of issues relevant to the struggle of the peoples Maroons in the definition of public policies in the state, such as territoriality, identity, citizenship and land tenure. The creation in 1990 of a State Coordination Quilombo Communities strengthened the struggle for land, the search for the institutionalization of ensuring their social rights and the rise of black identities in about 170 communities in the State identified Maroons.
