Abstract

In this paper we intend to analyze the work of Washington Irving, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow (2011), in the light of the theory of representation, thought by Roger Chartier, which helps us in the following question: what are the images created by the author and which groups of individuals Are they being represented by them? That is, we intend to think about the projects in conflicts, whom Irving criticized and what his ideal of American, at a certain moment, from these representations. To bring to the discussion the political, economic and social moment that the United States lived at that time and how this space affects the relations between the different federative states of the Union, relations that generates the images created by Irving. Aiming at these objectives, around the central problematic, we will use the election of the two central characters of The Legend of the Sleepy Hollow and from there, we will think how the protagonist and antagonist relate to each other in the work and what, or who, they represent as characters
