Abstract

During the times of the ecclesiastical government of Pope Simon of Alexandria (689 - 701), a clergyman of the people of the Indies presented himself in his court asking for a bishop to be assigned to his community of origin. The fact that the patriarch is submitted to the muslim government and his foreigner visitor is not has, however, stopped the case from having a simple solution. The purpose of this paper is, starting from this episode, to draw some considerations regarding how the closure of the Indian horizons of the missions and the ecclesiastical relations of the Orthodox Coptic Church came to be, before even of the first century of muslim arab domain in Egypt.
