Sensibilidade (in)civilizada
poder público, animais de tração e touradas em Belém (1897-1911)
Keywords:
Animals, Civilization, BelémAbstract
Throughout Antonio Lemos Stewardship (1897-1911), during the peak of rubber economy and the consolidation of the republican regime, certain uses of animals in Belém were banned through the “Código de Polícia Municipal”. This article investigates why the government wanted to discipline the drivers of vehicles of the state capital in the use of animals of traction and allowed the maltreatment of bulls in bullfights. To this end, I investigated sources as “Códigos de Posturas”, “Relatórios do Intendente”, newspapers and literature. I analyzed this documentation using the concept of civilization.
