The theme presented in this article concerns the experiences lived in the first sixteen years of operation of the Federal University of Pará. This time frame extends from the creation of UFPA until the end of the mandate of Rector Aloysio Chaves, when the University Reform is consolidated. It was the temporality that best suited the purpose of this article: to discuss, through oral sources, how the academic community experienced this moment of modernization and transformation after the 1964 civil-military coup. We will use the methodology of Oral History, considering the testimonials as our main analytical material. One of the main results achieved was the understanding that the period is viewed in different ways, considering the position of each actor involved, building conflicting memories about the same historical context.
