Abstract

This article aims to analyze the diseases of the population in the Province of Parahyba, especially in the Sertão, during the Drought of 1877-1879. The period was marked by an increase in mortality, malnutrition and numerous diseases, phenomena intensified by the displacement of families from different regions towards Brejo and the Capital of the Province. The research is based on the concept of social representations, proposed by Cultural History; and in the History of Health and Diseases. To support our research, we used newspaper articles, presidential and medical reports, as well as the List of Public Relief Commissions as sources.

  Master's student at the Postgraduate Program in History at UFPB (PPGH/UFPB); and member of the Society and Culture Research Group in the Northeast of the 19th century (CNPq/UFPB). He has experience in the area of ​​History, with an emphasis on Political, Social and Cultural History, working mainly on the following themes: Health and Diseases in Nineteenth-Century Paraíba and History of Women's Football in Brazil from the perspective of gender studies. Professor of the Department and Postgraduate Program in History at UFPB: and leader of the Society and Culture research group in the Northeast of the 19th century (CNPq/UFPB). Graduated in History from the Federal University of Paraíba (1995); master's degree in History from the Federal University of Pernambuco (1999), with the theme "Signs in Confrontation: the archaic and the modern in the Princess (PB) of the Twenties"; and a PhD in History from the Federal University of Pernambuco (2005), entitled "Opulent and Good Lineage People: Family, Politics and Power Relations in Paraíba (1817-1824)". She is a Post-Doctor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais/PROCAD, with the project "Paraíba and provincial (inter)connections: elites, power and family networks (1825-1840)". Full Professor of the Department of History and the Postgraduate Program in History at the Federal University of Paraíba. Coordinates a research group on "Society and Culture in the Northeast of the 19th century", linked to CNPq. He is part of the editorial board of Revista Saeculum. He has experience and teaches in the area of ​​Ancient History; History of Brazil and Paraíba with an emphasis on the 19th century, working mainly in History of the Northeast with an interest in guidance on the following topics: Political Cultures; Elites, Family Networks and the History of Health and Diseases in 19th Century Brazil.
