Writer and favela resident: the construction of the image of Carolina Maria de Jesus (1940-1964)

This research discusses the idea of “discovery” of Carolina Maria de Jesus by Audálio Dantas in 1958, and analyzes the stereotypical narratives that consolidate the author and her work. With the main objective of analyzing how the image of Carolina Maria de Jesus was constructed since her first publication in the brazilian press in 1940 until 1964, a period in which the author fell into media oblivion and literary erasure, and having as main sources the images of Carolina Maria de Jesus in the news and in the journalistic archive of Última Hora, the stereotypical construction of the author as a black woman from the favelas and semi-literate will be problematized, consolidated after the fame and publication of her book “Child of the Dark” (1960), and which improved in the author’s other writings.
