Abstract

This review analyzes the book Caminhos do gado: conquista e ocupação do sul do Maranhão, by Maranhão historian Maria do Socorro Coelho Cabral. The work deals with the two fronts of colonization that built the state of Maranhão, in this case, the coastal front and the pastoral and/or inland front. Considered one of the reference works of 20th century Maranhão historiography, the study allows us to reflect on the use of spatial categories in historical analysis.
