This paper reflects on the possible lessons that can be drawn from the Vocacional High Schools (VHSs) of São Paulo (1961-1969) in their connection with public history and the theory of history. First, the meanings of these two fields are explored (Santhiago, 2016; Rüsen, 2007; 2010; 2015). Next, some pedagogical practices of these schools are analyzed based on the previously outlined definitions (Rovai, 2005; Neves, 2010; Mascellani, 2010). Finally, the activities carried out in the VHSs are linked to public history, as well as to the role and meaning of history according to the theory of history. The conclusion reached is that the VHS teams worked with well-defined conceptions of history and its social function, offering insights into the public role of history in contemporary times.
