This study aims to reflect on the use of documentary archives from the Civil-Military Dictatorship in Maranhão in the process of writing history. The methodology combines a qualitative analysis of bibliographic references with a prosopographical case study focusing on the DOPS/MA archive. While we acknowledge the limitations and challenges of using archives, we do not dismiss their significance, as they are fundamental to the writing of history and the consolidation of democratic regimes (Bauer, Gertz, 2009). In this sense, the present study seeks to emphasize that the writing of history should strive to expand the range of narratives included in the historical record, especially when addressing sensitive pasts.
