The present research proposes a reading of the novel A hora e vez de Augusto Matraga by João Guimarães Rosa, published in Sagarana in 1946. This study will carry out the analysis of the established relationship between fear and courage throughout the narrative and the social relations represented by this series. The aim of this article is to show that fear moves the narrative while the characters, especially Nhô Augusto, are annihilated by it. Conversely, it is this very feeling that gives them the strength to proceed. Based on this understanding, we will seek to develop a discussion on how the category of fear can denote certain social relations, not only in an isolated way, but also linked to courage and power. To do so, Jean Delumeau’s História do medo no ocidente (2009) and Massaud Moisés’ A criação literária (2012) will theoretically base our discussion.
