Neoliberalism is a vague and controversial concept, but nonetheless crucial to understanding our time and the history of political, economic and social ideas of the last century. In this article, I comment on the reasons why this term is particularly controversial (its adoption was hesitant; it denotes both an ideological current and a set of practices or a historical stage; the ideological current has both geographical and historical variations; the historical stage is characterized by a plurality of aspects that do not always appear together), I analyze some of the most common criticisms of the adoption of this term and I suggest a definition capable of accounting for these vagueness, clearly distinguishing neoliberalism as a doctrine from neoliberalism as a set of practices or historical stage.
