Abstract

In this article, I address the meaning of darkness through a reconstruction of the problem of truth in Martin Heidegger’s thought. I analyze the development of the concept of truth in lectures and courses delivered between 1922 and 1932, focusing on: (i) the problem of truth; (ii) truth as unconcealment; (iii) the essence of truth and the abandonment of the unconcealment; and (iv) darkness as a metaphor for the essence of unconcealment. In the final part of the article, I demonstrate the relationship between the mystery of concealment as the essence of truth as unconcealment and the tension between knowing and not-knowing about life and death.
