FLOODING IN ACCELERATED URBAN EXPANSION SCENARIOS: CASE STUDY BAIRRO ALTO SUMARÉ, MOSSORÓ/RN

Abstract

In the last 10 years, the Municipality of Mossoró/RN has experienced an accelerated advance in the process of urban occupation, largely promoted by the Federal Government's ’My Home My Life Program’, flooding problems were reported in the Alto Sumaré neighborhood, a study área. In order to map and analyze the stretches susceptible to flooding in the period 2010 to 2019, the use of Geotechnologies was used to analyze urban expansion, mapping of areas susceptible to flooding of the urban expansion of the Alto Sumaré neighborhood. The results show an expansion percentage of 180.75% between 2010 and 2017 and 112.75% between 2017 and 2019. This expansion, associated with the installation of an inadequate drainage system, has promoted rapid drainage when lake volumes are reached, which increases the contribution area and, therefore, the flow downstream, causing flooding. Accumulation volumes for recurrence times of 5 showed values greater than the volume of depression. The accumulation volumes increase as the recurrence time increases, thus demonstrating that the damping capacity of most lagoons is insufficient.
