Abstract

The Jaguaribe River is the largest watercourse in Ceará, one of the semi-arid states of northeastern Brazil in which the effects of sazonal droughts are most significant. To manage the water scarcity, the Government has tried to perpetuate hydrographic basins, including the Jaguaribe River basin. Since the 1960s, the elaboration of policies and the construction of reservoirs have encouraged the beginning of irrigated agriculture in the state, bringing large multinational companies and the need for intense agribusiness modernization. Over the past 15 years, concerns about intense harm effects of the traditional agricultural activity on the Jaguaribe Basin environment have been shown throughout the scientific papers on the pesticides accumulation, heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the waters, sediments and living organisms, in addition to the increase in prevalence of acute intoxications and cancer in the population of municipalities within the Basin. The objective of the current work was to systematically review the publications on the health of Jaguaribe River, investigates the contamination on its bed, soil, fauna and human users, alerting to the neglect of one of the most important water sources in northeastern Brazil.

Roberta da Rocha Braga, Universidade Federal do Ceará / Universidade de São Paulo

Veterinary Doctor from the State University of Ceará (2008). Higher-level technical server at the Federal University of Ceará (2010), working at the Regional Center of Ophiology (NUROF-UFC). Master in Pathology from the Federal University of Ceará (2016). Doctoral Student in Experimental and Comparative Pathology at the University of São Paulo (2018). Professional Practice: Diagnosis and research. Areas of Interest: Veterinary pathology with an emphasis on parasitic diseases; management of wild animals with emphasis on herpetofauna.

Eliana Reiko Matushima, Universidade de São Paulo- USP

Graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics at the University of São Paulo (1983), master's and doctorate in Experimental and Comparative Pathology at the University of São Paulo (1988 and 1994). She was President of the Graduation Committee of FMVZ / USP in the period from 2008 to 20111. Currently she is a Senior Professor in the Department of Pathology at FMVZ / USP. She participated in the Board of Directors of the Brazilian Association of Veterinarians of Wild Animals - ABRAVAS, for 14 years, as Scientific Director, First Treasurer, First Secretary and President; she was Secretary of the Latin American Session of the Wildlife Disease Association. He is currently an Alternate Member of the Ministry of the Environment with the National Council for the Control of Animal Experimentation - CONCEA / MCTIC; and member of the Technical Commission of Veterinary Physicians of Wild Animals with the Regional Council of Veterinary Medicine of the State of São Paulo. Has experience in the area of ??Comparative Pathology of Wild Animals, acting mainly on the following themes: diseases, fish, birds, reptiles and wild mammals.
