ABSTRACT

The present text offers some reflections about my own research at Peruvian Amazon. There were conducted participant observations and interviews with curanderos, psychologists and visitors of two therapeutic centers, Takiwasi and Situlli, intended to treat health disorders with Amazon plant medicine. The centers act under the principles of the local “traditional” therapeutic triad: a) dietas (diets), b) purgas (purges) c) ceremonias con ayahuasca (ayahuasca ceremonies). Here is going to be analyzed the course of ideas that led to rethink the terms of the initial hypothesis of my doctorate research, which referred to the effectiveness of the treatment of chemical dependents at therapeutic communities that use ayahuasca as a therapeutic resource in the Peruvian Amazon. After the first visits to the field in 2012, it was necessary to question some apparently stable and coherent objects: the very notion of “chemical dependence rehabilitation”, the assumption of the therapeutic value of ayahuasca itself, and the power given to the curandero in those contexts. Therefore, I propose here that “chemical dependent” is a bio-social category – as its identity tends to be founded on a biological ground – whose implementation should not be uniform in all contexts. The aim of this work is resituate the therapeutic practices of Peruvian vegetalismo, rethinking scientific categories and bringing new and challenging senses to questions already elaborated.
